I have been terribly wrong on Global Fashion Group $GFG and certainly overestimated a fashion e-commerce marketplace's competitive advantages. At the same time, I still believe that there's more value in the business that the current share price suggests. I wrote an email to the board (see 2 screenshots below) to urge them to take quick action to preserve cash and create significant shareholder value. After the sale of LaModa in Russia for €100M, GFG is left with 3 businesses: The Iconic in Australia / NZ, Zalora in SEA and Dafiti in Latam. Dafiti has been a massive drag on cash flows because of fixed cost deleverage impacting EBITDA. Dafiti has been consistently unprofitable since 2021, with declining revenue and havily impacted by the competition with shein, which is incredibly strong in Brazil. $GFG still seats on €158M in net cash vs €50 market cap. While the company burns cash as it stands, both The Iconic and Zalora are close to EBITDA profitability even this year (despite decline in Revenues as the Australian market was particularly hit) and have historically been profitable. The Iconic consistently ranks #1 in its category in Australia so is typically true for Zalora in its various markets. I believe Dafiti should immediately be sold for whatever price we can get (even very low) as an acquirer could take advantage of €241M of tax loss carry-forwards and could use its scale to make it profitable (after all, gross margins are still sitting at 43% in H1) and management should focus on the businesses of The Iconic and Zalora. Recently I have seen some shareholders making similar asks to Wish ( something I definitely applaud. However, here the case is different since Wish is a complete shitshow, with super low gross margins and in that case the right course of action is likely to shut down their operations, just like it's asked by the activist shareholders. GFG's businesses on the other hand all have really good gross margins (40-45%), even Dafiti, and I believe The Iconic and Zalora, with the right focus on them, can return to be solid businesses. I really think that if management was to act quickly on Dafiti, while keeping on cutting costs (€40-50M are being cut this year according to management), shareholders could potentially 5-10x their investment at current prices (5x would award €100m of value to the operating businesses and the NOLs). On the other hand, if we keep on burning cash to the ground, it will be a completely different story.
