The C standard allows compilers to assume UB never happens, so they can optimize assuming it won’t occur. This can lead to bizarre effects where UB in one part of the code changes behavior earlier in execution. If x + 1 overflows, the compiler can assume the condition is impossible (since overflow is UB) and optimize away the entire if block or even unrelated code before it! Why It’s Hardcore: Compilers like GCC or Clang can reorder or eliminate code based on UB assumptions, making debugging a nightmare. Tools like UBSan help, but catching all UB is nearly impossible in large programs. Deep Dive into this: Read about "time travel UB" in the LLVM blog or C11 standard (Annex J.2). It’s a consequence of the compiler’s freedom to optimize across the entire program.
