For fun fact Friday, we are going to look at the movie Glory, as today, 18 July 1863, the 54th stormed Fort Wagner. The movie Glory was primarily shot in GA and draws from real letters written by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The movie is one of Hollywood's more accurate historical movies, but upon reading more about Shaw and the 54th, a few things stood out to me that were not portrayed well in the movie. Shaw did have to take more time to consider commanding the 54th, mostly because he was thinking about his long-term career goals. Shaw was married in the Spring of 1863 and was not involved in the 54th training as much as the movie suggests. Frederick Douglass's two sons fought in the 54th, as did the grandson of Sojourner Truth. Let me be clear: I love this movie and always recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. These “fun facts” are meant to simply be, “Did you know?” I expect most of you to be watching Glory tonight!

18 JULY 1863 – SECOND BATTLE OF FORT WAGNER The 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the second all-Black U.S. Army regiment to be formed during the Civil War, attacked Ft. Wagner on 18 JUL 1863; the events of the engagement were immortalized in the 1989 film Glory.
